These are pictures of Zachary at the Christmas Party at Mesa Vista. This is the special education school in our district. He actually doesn't attend this particular school but has had the opportunity to go on field trips there with his class for bigger holidays/events.
We are blessed that they started a new plan/program where they take special education class rooms and put them at traditional school sites. This allows for less time in transportation and more time in mainstream/traditional classrooms if that is part of their goals. It also affords the children in Zach's class opportunities to interact with typical children on the playground and elsewhere around the school, in addition to any classroom time. The first year this was done was when Zach was in Kindergarten.
Obviously we don't know any other way, but I feel this has made a big difference in Zach's overall social and community awareness. We make trips to Wal-Mart and the grocery store, to church and other community outings/events. It is ALWAYS nice to have children say "Hi Zach." Zach may not always respond, but it does give us a chance to work on these skills. But above all that, it gives him acceptance and a sense of community that he just might not have otherwise.
We are blessed and I thank God for that.
